4 Signs Perfectionism Is Creeping Into Your Work

Perfectionism does not have to be about being perfect. My twist on perfectionism is the refusal to accept any standard short of a standard as a perception of your mind’s eye, which causes great pain and minimal progress.

It IS possible to have healthy standards and I provide two key questions you can ask yourself to determine whether or not you are acting from perfectionism or a healthy standard for your life.

Plus! I offer four key signs perfectionism is creeping into your work life.

Watch the video below to find out more.

They key to living a successful life without perfection is mastering your mind so that you think clean thoughts and becoming so confident in your ability to feel any negative emotion so that you can create great results in your life – without playing small.

Be great.

Wake Up Happier

The only thing we want in our life is to be happy.

When you think about anything you’ve ever set your eyes to achieve or acquire… it was to feel good.

Think about it!

Think of anything you’ve ever bought, set out to do, or dreamt. When you think closely, it was all in an effort to feel a certain state – to feel happy about yourself and the people in your life.

However, given that life is 50/50, it’s nearly impossible we can feel happy all the time.

San Francisco Stress Management Coach

In fact, when you over-desire happiness, that’s when you feel the most unhappy.

Though that’s not to say you can’t be at peace during times of distress.

When you wake up most mornings, what is the first thought you have when your eyes open and your feet hit the floor?

Is it:

  • Here we go again…
  • Sigh…
  • I don’t want to see “ABC” person
  • Why do I feel so blah?

Or perhaps you notice a low grade vibration that doesn’t necessarily get you jumping out of bed.

Most people spend their entire day trying to “fix” what’s causing them to feel this way.

Whether it’s something at work, the boss, the relationship, the boredom, etc. Most people try to make those things better so that they can feel good.

What I want to offer is rather than be at the effect of those things, it is to optimize the way your mind thinks and to train your brain in a way that automatically thinks better thoughts despite what is happening.

If you can think empowering thoughts that get you jumping out of bed and excited to make those circumstance better, wouldn’t that be a more effective use of your energy than trying to change what you feel is causing your stress, anxiety, and worry?

The former allows you to tap into your own power and use it in a way that serves you.

The latter forces you to be at the effect of something outside of you; and that is never empowering.

Learn to think differently and learn to think better thoughts.

Once you can optimize your mind to do this, suddenly you see life a little differently…

  • you may just wake up happier….and
  • you’re smiling and humming along to your favorite song as you grab your keys
  • laughing with your co-workers before jumping into a meeting
  • making small talk with the barista and tipping extra because you feel a lightness you haven’t felt in a really long time

Understand how to think better thoughts in every situation. It’s the key to happiness.

How To Leverage Worrying To Serve You

I’m sure we’ve all been there before… when our mind is consumed with what if’s, worst case scenarios, and anxiety ridden thoughts. Unfortunately, when we are in a state of worry, all we do is produce concern for the future (near and/or far).

Worrying hardly, if ever, produces a net positive gain for the person in worry.

All worrying does is produce cortisol in your system and sends a false alarm to your body and subconscious to stay in high alert.

So if worrying doesn’t serve our highest good, what can we do to redirect ourselves so that we are back in alignment and calibrated for optimal performance?

Seattle Stress Management Coach, Burnout and Adrenal Fatigue

We leverage it.

Oftentimes worrying is another opportunity to look deeper into our limiting beliefs.

Somewhere, deep inside ourselves, there is a thought that is causing our worry.

And it isn’t about a deadline, moving, interviewing, having difficult conversation, or even the dog.

It goes much deeper.

The more you do to find the root of the worry, the less your worrying consumes you.

Think of worrisome thoughts as the branches of a tree.

We spend a lot of our time and energy trying to control and relieve each branch, when really unless we get to the root of it all… we give our tree (ourselves) room to grow more worries.

So spend some time in silence and ask yourself, “What is this worry trying to tell me?” and wait patiently.

Your job is to wait, listen, and appreciate the fact that this worry has come into your life.

Trust me, it’s the fastest most easiest way to relief….

…. and you get a much more rewarding answer for doing this work.

The #1 Reason For Recurring Stress And What You Can Do To Stop It

Recurring stress over the same issue may happen for several reasons, and today, we’ll be covering the top reasons why. But before we do, let me ask you this question. When you think about your stress, what or whom causes the stress the most? Could it be:

  • your boss?
  • staring at excel spreadsheets all day?
  • office politics?
  • cranky children?
  • mother-in-law?
  • too little time on your calendar?

Let’s take the lack of time on your calendar as an example.

The number one reason most people believe this is stressful is because they believe what is filling their calendar to begin with is to blame. They may say things such as, “I’m a busy mom with a full time job and my kids can’t do it without me” or “This is just how my life is right now; I can’t say no to anything on my calendar”.

Seattle Stress Management and Executive Coach

When we choose to say these things, what we inadvertently are doing is giving our power away to outside circumstances. This leaves us in victim mentality, and this is never a good thing.

When we stay in victim mode we don’t make choices that serve us. Instead we continue to perpetuate the circumstance, and unfortunately, stay stressed!

What if instead you said things that gave you your power back and offered you choices such as:

  • I’m a bad-ass mom and cherish every moment I get with my children
  • I can look into hiring part time support to help with the chores
  • I will only say yes to invites that have a net positive result for me and my family

Thoughts such as the ones above take you out of victim mentality and propel you forward to take positive action. Staying in the original stressful thoughts only keep you there. See the difference?

Now, another reason most people stay stressed about the same issue is because they haven’t dug deep enough to the root cause of their stress.

Most often than not, when I first work with a client I see that there is always something much deeper than a “calendar”, “boss”, or whatever issue it was they originally came in with.

This is where we need to dig through layered thoughts, conscious and unconscious, to identify what the sticking point it.

It very well could be fear of death, security issues, lack of control, etc. and until we resolve THESE issues no matter what you do to try and control your calendar you very well may remain stressed because again, it’s not the calendar that is causing you your stress.

So ask yourself these questions:

  • Have I been speaking to myself as the victim?
  • How can I change my thoughts to propel me into positive action?
  • What could be the real issue underlying all this?

Until we treat the root of how and why we automatically think disserving thoughts, our stress may very well remain, and this is why stress is never a bad thing. Our stress is only trying to teach us what we need to bring to the surface so that we can finally resolve a much bigger issue and start living the life we know deep down we’re all meant to live.

How To Be Stress Free

I get asked all the time, “Are you really stress-free? Is it possible?”

And for those that have followed me for some time, know that I like to say that life is 50/50.

And if life is going to be half negative…. well, our problems, unfortunately (or fortunately if you like the growth mindset), are forever.

Seattle Stress Management Coach

However, that does not mean your stress needs to be forever.

Your stress can be something you quickly manage and disengage with on a problem by problem basis.

What I see most often though, is that people linger in the stress and make their circumstances much bigger than it has to be.

This happens for two major reasons:

  1. We don’t know how to properly process the stress so that it can flow out of the body
  2. We don’t know how to diffuse the root cause of stress at the causal level (most people react from the effect i.e., their job, a specific person, the neighbor, the road rager, etc.)

Suddenly, these same people who had one problem…. now have three.

You see, stress can be elusive when you don’t know what to pinpoint or HOW to disengage quickly and effectively.

When we don’t know how to process stress, we end up not knowing how to live life at an optimal level.

Why?

Because stress is one spectrum of our emotions.

When we know how to properly process and manage stress, we now know how to do the same for every negative emotion we ever feel.

But,  back to the topic at hand….

Can we be stress free?

No, not forever.

But what we can be is a person with a stress-free mentality toward stress because we now know how to handle it whenever it arises instead of panicking or in high anxiety about the stress itself.

Do yourself a favor an get real intimate with why and how you react to every situation in your life. It will show you exactly what you need to work on.
